Nauset Beach Report – April 2012
I took advantage of the sunny weather on April 1st to take a beach run out on Nauset. The air pumps are not hooked up yet. As the weather warms they should be up in time. The Pochet area continues to look good with a nice build up of dunes and grass. There are only 2-3 small locations that are not filled in. When these areas close it will discriminate young birds from traveling across the trail. If this area continues to build it increrase our chances of keeping the beach open.
The back trail is a solid single track from the gate house to the point. The front beach is in very good shape with the exception of the areas between trail 2 and 3 as well as trails 6 and 7. In these sections it is not recommended to travel at high tide. I have heard there are numerous plovers south of trail 7. Nests have not been established, but with the nicer weather expect an earlier migration to the beach. Symbolic fencing has already been put in place in this area. There is access to the clam flats so enjoy.
Our spring conservation projects are approaching . This is a great opportunity to give a little back to what we all love so much. Your vehicles, manpower, and sense of humor makes for a great project. Remember this is a great way for the family to come together in a rewarding and educational venture. Bring your friends and neighbors as this is a great opportunity to get new members involved.
The Nauset Conservation project is scheduled for Sunday, April 22, 2012 at 9:30am. I spoke to the Town of Orleans yesterday. This year they would like to conduct a beach clean up from the parking lot to the Chatham inlet. They will have two trucks in the lower parking lot, one for garbage and one for wood. They would also like assistance in putting up symbolic fencing from trail one to trail six. Please bring shovels to dig post and hammers to pound in stakes. They would like to thank the MBBA for our continued help and service at Nauset Beach.
This project follows the Race Point project on Saturday so it makes for a real enjoyable weekend for all. There is plenty of room for self-contained vehichles on the beach at Nauset. We plan on spending Saturday night out on Nauset so if you have not seen the beach this is a great opportunity to do so.
Since last month the National Seashore has dismantled and removed the five cottages from North Beach Island. Unfortunately this has strongly effected many people with strong ties to the beach as well as a community as a whole. A piece of history has been lost.
