June 2012
Nauset Beach Report
After this week's stormy weather and astronomical high tides there is a travel advisory in place for the Orleans Spit. Due to high tides and winds over the last couple of days we have experienced erosion and have lost a substantial amount of symbolic fencing. There is currently ½ mile of Beach open to ORV’s on Nauset Spit. As the town moves and replace posts, stakes, string and signs the town will open more of Nauset Spit. The entire Nauset Spit re-opened by the weekend.
Effective June 6, 2012 off road vehical travel to the south end of Nauset Beach parking lot is closed to protect unfledge Piping Plovers. At this time there are three identified plover nest in the Pochet area, one nest on the outside beach by trail three and one nest on the outside beach by trail four. The Town of Chatham Bird Monitor has indicated that there is several nesting birds at Trail #6 and Trail #7 and it has been posted.
Closures for ORV travel for unfledged piping plovers for both the North and South ends of Nauset Beach trails will occur as has happened in past summers. The full length of closure can not be prodicted as storms, weather and predation can affect whether eggs hatch or survive. Orleans Camp escorts will begin June 8th. See the town website for more information.
The Nauset Beach parking lots rermain open and unaffected by nesting birds. Pedestrians can still fish, surf, and sunbath provided they stay out of the symbolic fenced areas. Vehicles with a 2012 Off Road vehical sticker will be permitted to park in the main parking lot during the period of off road closure.
Nauset oversdand stickers are on sale. The process remains the same as years past. Prices for the season and current beach conditions on their website.
