Nauset Report July 8, 2012
After consulting with beach administrators for the Town of Orleans and the Chatham Bird Monitor here is the latest update.
Nauset Beach in Orleans has one Brood at Pochet, which fledged on July 5th, and another Brood should fledge around July 10th. Unfortunately there two nests at the Pochet area and two nests just south of the Pochet area that have not hatched. They are due to hatch any day now. As you know Birds can fledge as early as 28 days or can take longer so I cannot give a date for trail openings, but worse case scenario is another month of closures.
On the beach there is one brood north of trail #3 and one nest north of trail #3 and one south of trail #4 which are due to hatch around July 14th. The front beach is in good driving condition with the exception of the area around Trail #5.
Chatham has quite a few birds on the ground. Four unhatched plover nests on the east side, and numerous least tern nests from trail #7 south. The Inside road for trail 6 south is closed as the road goes right between two nests. Expect all nests to be hatched by July 12th if and when chicks go to bayside, which we expect they will do, the beach will be opened down towards the point.
So the key here is the birds at Pochet will keep Nauset Beach closed regardless of what is happening in Chatham. I wish I had better news or a firm date for opening. Nauset has been closed since June 6, 2012.
