This is an email just just now received from Nina. (copied and pasted)
Hi all, I wanted to give you an update on the plover situation. Right now we have one chick holding the beach closed at 1.8 miles. The chick hatched on July 13 and is 27 days old today. Generally plovers fledged between 25 and 35 days. However, our chick is still not exhibiting any flapping behavior and is still downy (indicating lack of flight feathers). I was really hoping to have this bird fledged by this weekend but it is not looking good. I will email everyone if this status changes. The good news is that plovers are considered fledged (no matter what) at day 35 so we will have the beach open to Trail 6 by the weekend of August 18th.
We will continue with the parking plan until the beach is open. Presently the first 0.9 miles of beach is for camper/chases (and daytrippers visiting campers) and the second 0.9 miles of beach is for daytrippers. We are parking both campers and daytrippers perpendicular. I am happy to report that we have not turned away patrons this year and I feel that the beach is safer due to the increased width of the ORV corridor.
Please call if you have any questions.
Nina
