Nauset Beach Report
Nauset Beach is in winter mode as we speak. Due to the last few storms (around the time of Hurricane Sandy) the front beach that had built up so nicely over the last year was all washed away. The front beach must now begin again to build. Hopefully the winter will be kind and we will be blessed in the spring. There are plenty of sand bars protecting the beach at this time. At high tide there are many places where the water reaches the foot of the dune. It is reccommemnded that you travel at low to mid tide when on the front beach. The trail on the inside remains in good condition. There are three locations at the Pochet pass that now give access to the trail. If these areas remain open it would not be good for beach access as the nesting of spring birds will take full advantage.
Recently the Town of Orleans and the Town of Chatham selectman boards met in a joint session to discuss various beach management issues. Topics included the Nauset Beach agreement and the impact of the seals and sharks on the bathing beaches as well as dealing with beach closures due to endangered species nesting on the beach. The proliferation of great white sharks off Chatham and Orleans in recent years has caused concern about how to keep swimmers safe. More information is to come.
As of January 2013 I will no longer be the Nauset Beach representative. At this time I feel I can not give 100% of my attention to the position and I believe the club deserves more. I will continue to be strongly involved and will continue to represent Nauset Beach as one of two courtesy patrol. I wanted to thanks all that have guided me to this point and let you know how much your effort and partnerships have been appreciated. I look forward to seeing you on the beach and at the projects.
Happy Holidays,
