Race Point south is open to exit 8 and the pole line is open to Hatches Harbor, so while it will be busy, I don't expect SUV's bumper to bumper. The self contained area will be crowded, I expect it will expand to fit everyone, but not outrageously. Fairly normal stuff. Peter

There is a plover nest between Old Harbor and the south access trail that is expected to hatch between July 10 - 14 which will close the south side until the birds fledge (28-35 days) there are a lot of predators around and many nests have already been taken but we could be out till mid August. The north side is loaded with birds so it will be a while before it reopens. On July first they started counting days (dump passes) but apparently aren't enforcing it too much as yet. I'll do my best to keep you posted as events transpire. Peter

RACE POINT BEACH UPDATE Note from Russ 7/17/2013
Just got off of the beach by the crossover. My concerns were more about the height and slope of the beach.
I am going to open a SCV area out there. There is a limited amount of space out there, so the SCV area will only be 0.1 miles. We are not going to limit the type or length of SCV allowed to access the beach. I am going to restrict the time SCV's are allowed to access however. SCV's will be allowed to access between 6-9 AM and 6-9 PM. The SCV area will open tomorrow 7/18 at 6 AM. As a reminder all SCV's are required to obtain Dump passes.
Thanks,
Russ

Russ opened 4/10 of a mile at High Head for ORV's only. There is a small ORV section at Race Point north and hatches is open via the pole line route. The only SCV area is south of the cross over also only accessible by the pole line road and the Visitors Center lower parking lot. The north and south SCV areas are still closed. Peter

Race Point North SCV area is open! There are dips at the ends of the access trails, sounds like it's best to take the left one as the dip isn't as bad. There is about 2/10 of a mile open. The Pole Line route is now closed to SCV's

Both Self Contained areas North & South are now open. Race Point South is open for about 1.3 miles (basically to the Mission Bell). Both areas should remain open for the rest of the season, as the birds have apparently moved on for the season.

What a perfect weekend and a great conservation project with 75 of my closest friends. We picked up over 5 truck loads of trash and junk and the beach looks marvelous! The food was fantastic, both lunch and the potluck, the campfire was excellent and we managed to burn every bit of wood right down to gray ash, thanks to everyone involved. The memorial service for Cliff went very well it was great to have Clara White and her family present as we honored our friend on the beach. Wonderful memories and touching stories .
