NAUSET BEACH REPORT July 8, 2013
I hope all of you are enjoying the summer. I also hope the July 4th celebration was a good one. It’s been quite some time since my last report, I generally don’t enjoy sharing crummy news but I feel I have waited long enough to update everyone.
I received an update this morning from the Orleans Department of Natural Resources Manager; unfortunately the update was a very disappointing one. It seems that a few of the nests that forced the closure of the OSV trails in early June were lost to a combination of predation and over-wash. What is more disturbing is most of these birds have re-nested. I was told the hatch date for the latest nest is expected on or around July 17th. Understanding that typical fledge time is 28-35 days from the hatching date, this is very, very discouraging news to say the least. I also understand we have a Least Tern issue within the Pochet wash-over that is currently being further examined by the town. I plan to check in weekly with management and will update everyone when new information is received.
As for the condition of the beach; it has built up nicely and will be very enjoyable once we are back out there.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have.
