There are a total of 71 pairs of piping plovers on Seashore beaches including 10 pairs incubating eggs and 48 pairs tending 132 unfledged chicks. To date, a total of 11 pairs of plovers in the North District successfully fledged 28 chicks. The South District expects to fledge their first chicks next week.
Some pairs of plovers have given up after several unsuccessful nesting attempts or after losing chicks. There are still a few determined pairs that are scraping and could possibly re-nest. Pairs generally stop re-nesting by the first week in July.
Least Terns –There are approximately 217 nesting pairs of least terns in the North District on 7 beaches (Race Point North and South, High Head, Exit 9, Head of the Meadow, Exit 9, and Wood End). The South District has a total of 20 nesting pairs at Jeremy Point. The largest colony in the park (approximately100 nesting pairs) at Head of the Meadow lost 37 nests to coyote and crow predation. Chicks are present on most beaches with nesting terns. Some chicks are venturing outside of the symbolic fencing and are vulnerable to being accidentally stepped on.

Latest Map www.nps.gov/caco/upload/ORVMap%207_18_10.JPGLots of beach to the south High Head to Long Nook Race Point South is open for about 2/10 SCV area is small but will keep growing as the birds fledge, (terns). Race Point North should be open around the first week of August with any luck at all could be sooner, I'll keep you posted. This weekend marked the return of the dump pass, so they are counting days again in all of the SCV areas, including the visitors center. Peter

Latest map... www.nps.gov/caco/upload/ORVMap%207_30_10.JPGThe beach was fantastic this weekend with plenty of space, that will fill in quick with the great weather we are having. The South side SCV area will be moved down the beach this week to get it away from the protected beach. Lot's of terns causing problems, 3 broods of plovers left. Peter

Latest map... www.nps.gov/caco/upload/ORVMap%208_14_10-2.JPGThere are big cuts (Race point north and down back just past Exit 9), there are also still a few nests that should clear out soon. I just spent 10 fantastic days on the beach, plenty of space, good friends and perfect weather. This is Carnival week in town with plenty of sights to be seen, I understand the theme is "welcome to the jungle" should be interesting. Peter

Weekend update for Race Point.... Race Point beach will close tomorrow 9/2/10, the only area where SCV's will be allowed to stay is Pilgrim Heights. It's too soon to guess when it will reopen but late Sunday is a safe bet right now. The CCNS web sight won't be kept up till after the storm but the answer machine will be up to date.

After the effects of Tropical storm Earl passed, the beach reopened on Saturday morning around 11 with Race Point south opening a little later and eventually opening almost to exit 9, the tides this week are supposed to be high so some adjustments could still happen. I thought that the rangers did a really good job with the hurricane, plans, controls and execution and I actually heard no grumbling at all from the beach users this weekend. I hope everyone is planning to join us for the fall project on Sept. 18th.
