ORLEANS — A 14-year-old boy was taken to Cape Cod Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries yesterday after being submerged beneath several feet of sand on Nauset Beach, fire department officials said.
At about 5 p.m., the South Glastonbury, Conn., boy was sitting in the bottom of a hole that he, his brother and friends had dug when the sand collapsed on top of him, fire officials said.
Sand covered the boy's face for nearly 20 seconds before his father swept it away, fire officials said, adding that it took several minutes to remove the boy from the sand.
The boy was taken to the hospital as a precaution to check for sand that might have entered his lungs or airways, fire officials said.
