Nauset Beach Report – January 2012
I took a ride out on Nauset this New Years’ day. The weather was a balmy 50 degrees with plenty of sunshine. A special thanks to the Town of Orleans for building up the elevation of the inner trail. Their continued efforts to maintain beach access is much appreciated by all. The addition of sand to the trail between the gate and trail one will help keep things dry during the very high tides and storm surges and cut down on ice in the trail this winter. There are large sand bars off the front beach at low tide, no doubt from the sand taken off the face of the dunes. With any luck this sand can be pushed back onto the beach in time for summer. At high tide there are still areas on the front beach that are thin and may not be passable so check the tides before you go for a drive. The point has changed dramatically with lots of sand filling in the inlet. At this point there is plenty of beach and many were out for the day enjoying the weather.
Regarding North Beach Island The Massachusetts State Historic Preservation Officer (SHPO) has determined that the 11 NBI camps are not eligible for listing on the National Historic Register as an historic district and will be taken down. This determination will most likely be appealed to the Keeper of the National Register. This is not new territory for Chatham citizens. Many may be aware the SHPO's decision regarding the Mitchell River Bridge was overturned by the Keeper. Regardless of the decision and intent to appeal, the special occupancy permit holders have sadly removed the last of their personal belongings from their beloved camps in preparation for the expiration of those permits that occurred at midnight on 12/31/11. It will not be a happy new year for many.
