We now have a small SCV area on the south side, giving us 3 self contained vehicle areas, there are still terns nesting (and coyotes feeding) so the situation is constantly changing.
Race Point North reopened to about 1/10 of a mile beyond the crossover. There is still a lot of symbolic fencing taking up a lot of beach making some areas very narrow.
As of right now that gives us about 6 miles of beach open, 1.8 at Race Point North, 2.4 at Race Point South and 1.8 at High Head.

Current map www.nps.gov/caco/upload/ORVMap8_3_2009.JPGI just spent 4 days on Race Point south and there was plenty of room, and plenty of beach, good size bluefish off the beach to keep it interesting. Hope everyone is enjoying their summer. Peter

Peter,
We have established the SCV areas on Race Point north and south again. The Race Point north SCV area is a short distance east of the crossover road and is accessible via the pole line road. The tern nest at the Race Point north access is being monitored on a daily basis. We have shut down the other SCV areas at High Head (one unit) and the visitor center parking lot (two units).

Fall Conservation Project scheduled at Race Point Beach We have settled on September 19th for the fall conservation project. The beach permit fee will be waived for members participating in the project and the third tier of the parking lot will also be available. This is a great opportunity to clean up the beach as all of the symbolic fencing will be down and the entire beach wide open. Please mark your calendars and drop me an email if you think you can make it! Peter pmurray@control7.com

Peter,
We were able to reopen 0.5 miles on Race Point north from the main access, Hatches Harbor via the pole line road, and 2.4 miles of Race Point south beach yesterday morning. SCV areas were established on both Race Point north and south beaches near the main accesses. We were able to reopen the crossover to the Race Point north beach and the area around the Race to Hatches Harbor yesterday afternoon. This opened all of Race Point north beach except for a 0.2 mile section near the middle of this beach.
High Head access and the Coast Guard night fishing access remain closed. Head of the Meadow access is open and the corridor is approximately 0.5 miles long. We'll continue monitoring the closed areas and will reopen them when we have enough beach accretion.
The beaches with an easterly aspect received the heaviest impacts. Waves washed up to and over the grass on most of the beaches this weekend.

There is now a big cut on the bathing beach that eliminates driving across it, as well as a big cut at High Head that forced them to close the beach there, the storm also made the other two cuts between the Mission Bell and Exit 8 much worse, so right now not much beach is open to the south, the good news is that the moving sand built up in Hatches Harbor, so it looks excellent right now. New map: www.nps.gov/caco/upload/ORVMap10_20_2009.JPGThe phone system control box at the ranger station burnt out the other day so the phone service is spotty until they get it fixed, the message line is out and there may not be phone service at the oversand office. The 508-487-2100 number is working if you need to call them. Peter
