Cape Cod National Seashore, Provincetown, MA Off road information line: 508-487-3698, General information line: 508-487-2100, extension 110 Web site: www.nps.gov/cacoThe beach is open and in good shape from Hatches Harbor down to exit 8, the sea life put on quite a show this last weekend during the project with different types of whales, dolphins, and seals, judging from this and the birds, the water is full of bait. Of course the symbolic fence is taking most of the beach at this time, hopefully as the birds nest it will get pushed back a bit, there were quite a few plovers around and 3 nests already with eggs. The Conservation project was a great success, thanks to everyone that came out to help; we cleaned over 4 miles of beach, once again Bill & Angela Correia did a wonderful job with the food, and a good time was had by all. The mission bell will be back in place this year after a long absence, the posts are up, just waiting for the bell. It is a great land mark from the beach and the boat, to let you know where you are. The Rangers will be selling stickers at Spring Meet on Sunday. Peter Murray, Race Point Beach Rep.

Memorial Day Weekend 2009 was a success, we actually had (3) self-contained areas and the beach remained open from Hatches to Exit 8, there is a nest very close to the trail at Hatches and at high tide there is some restrictions because it's skinny.
Fishing from the beach was good (lot of schoolies) but some keepers, we were even catching Mackerel from the beach up to 4 at a time, the boats did okay too, the bottom is reportedly covered with lobsters but there were keeper stripers to be had!
The trail to the back side is steep so you need to keep your tires soft, hopefully we can get one more weekend before the birds start to hatch, but the nests are everywhere so the beach will be closing soon. Keep the faith and hope for early flyers.

To all,
Here's a synopsis of ORV route closures that are expected over the next couple weeks. Hatches Harbor spit will be closing on the evening of May 31. This gets us through this coming weekend. The Race Point South access will be closing about June 2, when the nest in front of the Old Harbor Lifesaving Station hatches. The Race Point North access will be closing about June 8. This will put us into a near closure - less than 0.5 miles of corridor open.
There is no nesting activity on the Pole Line Road at this time, so the crossover access out to the north end of Race Point North beach will remain open for the foreseeable future. We have about 0.3 miles of beach in front of the crossover access at this time. A section near the High Head access may also be available for a portion of the nesting season and will be available with a near closure . There is also up to 1.9 miles of corridor open to nighttime fishing from 6:00 PM until 7:00 AM south of Coast Guard beach in Truro.
Once we get into the near closure phase, beach fees are waved on the north district beaches for visitors with ORV permits.
Hatch dates are not exact, and hatch windows cover two days before and after the 27th day of incubation dates shown above.

The Self Contained Vehicle area on Race Point North is closed as of today due to birds hatching, so both SCV areas are now closed.
Self contained vehicles can park in the third tier of the Race Point Parking lot.
The pole line route is open to the crossover and a small section of beach is open outside the crossover.
High Head will be opened for approximately 3/10 of a mile, but not to SCV's.
More details to follow as they become available.

They are going to open up 3/4 mile at High Head which will include a small SCV area (maybe 20 rigs) to the right of the trail. The access trail is still steep but better than it was, leaving the beach is still difficult particularly at high tide.
The Visitor center and Pilgrim heights are available also.
The other SCV areas are closed for the foreseeable future due to plovers and terns.

The bulk of open beach is to the south in Truro at High Head, based on the reaction to vehicles from the terns Race Point North & South will continue to be closed due to terns, the plovers have fledged except for some on the northern end of the Race. I spent a wonderful 10 days on the beach at High Head, there was lots of room, the beach is wide and actually opened all the way to Head of the Meadow, which is a nice drive. In the evening we drove to Head of the Meadow, went out on Route 6 to Highland Road (first exit) and went fishing on Coast Guard Beach, what a beautiful spot, quite different from seeing it from the boat. There are hundreds of seals in the area and at AM low tide they sunbathe on the bar south of the SCV area, it is something to see, but you can rarely throw a plug without a seal head popping up. The Visitors Center and Pilgrim Heights are still open for those unable (or unwilling) to use High Head. Latest map www.nps.gov/caco/upload/ORVMap7_08_2009.JPGThe fishing from the beach was slow, but I hear the boats are doing well. See you out there. Peter

Race Point North is opening today for 2/10 of a mile for vehicles only including SCV's, (no pedestrians or walking by the nests) but it could still be for only a couple of weeks until the birds hatch, after that it will most likely close.
It will be awhile before the south side opens.

The latest storm did a number on the nesting terns and as a result most of the beach is open at this point. Race point north SCV area has reopened after the high tides and should be larger than it was. Race point south is narrow so a SCV area is in question at this time. As you can see from the map there is plenty of beach open to ORV's but be careful in the cuts. Latest map: www.nps.gov/caco/upload/ORVMap7_25_2009.JPGPeter
