Has cell phone reception improved on Race Point? I wrote to AT&T last fall about the poor service and they replied saying they would inform their engineers about the problem. I haven't heard anything since from them and wrote another letter this week.

I have Verizon, but still needed to put my antenna up last weekend, I believe the closest cell tower is still 7.5 miles away, which doesn't help.
If anyone wants I still have a copy of "How to build a cell phone beam antenna setup for difficult reception areas." By Bryan Cerqua, W1BRI, which was done for Race Point.
Drop me an email pmurray@control7.com

I use a Yagi 800 antenna and a Wilson amplifier with AT&T. Pointing it west from Boston to Hyannis I get 6-3 bars but NO service so I wrote AT&T about it last fall they said they would talk to their tech folks about it. I had no reply since so I wrote another letter last week still waiting for a reply. The rangers may have a better idea about reception out there. JB

There was a spot, about 5 feet from a tuff of beach grass on a flat area, that had a washed ashore tree stump, from which verizon worked. Move a few feet in any direction and reception was lost. Now,....if had only gotten some GPS numbers on it....

The lack of cell service is part of the attraction. Serenity.

Interesting how we have become so dependent on technology we have only had a few years that we are unwilling to part with it even for a few hours or days. We drive hours to listen to the ocean and are upset if we cannot hear our cell phone ring. If the call was important they would leave you a message that you could deal with when you get back to where there is service. Would a cell tower on the mission bell make us happy or mad?

It's not about toys or gagets it's about being able to get away ONLY because I still can stay in touch with employees, job or business situations and family members that may have special needs or concerns that require immediate attention along with any possible beach emergencies. Nice to have a life without care and I envy those who can be that way. But a call on the Race sure beats having to drive into town every day to check in. Knowing you can easily call the rangers or 911 for help is an asset. The cell phone makes it all work only if it works properly as the cell companies claim it does.

My wife agree with you! She feels every mountain should have a cell tower in case she need to use it. On a lonely highway when she wants a cell phone the most the service is the worse. We get use to new items very quickly. I use to have a pager that went off and sent me in search of a payphone. Try to find one of those now!
I'm now retired and not a slave to the "boss", however I have folks in nursing homes and children I want to be in touch with. I too what my cell phone to work when I want to use it. I just realize there are times it will not! I'm still trying to get my GPS to work when I scuba dive!!

As I said with the antenna and amp I got all tons of reception bars pointed when I pointed west but NOservice. I request that we all start writting and bombard our cell providers with our upset about no service on the Race. We are paying them to provide so where is their committment to us?

I got a response from AT&T, a nice young lady well schooled in dealing with customer complaints gave me a number of excuses like "the government won't let us install towers on National Park property", etc, etc,. And once again did not say why I can get 3-6 bars from Boston to Hyannis with No Service! She essentially said "too bad, and read your contract there is no service guarantees". So I am going to write again and try for their tech area. I encourage us all to start writting. Johnmbba1210

To me, thats not getting away. But we are all different and that makes the big globe spin. Wishing you luck but I will skip the more cell service call in.

Thank you for your realization that some may need cell service to get away. So, will you write your cell carrier and complain about poor service on the race and support fellow club members that need it in order to be on the Race and enjoy the serenity others experience and have written about? Will you encourage others to also write in support? Thanking you again for your acknowlegement.

What' the difference if you can't get on the beaches until summer is almost over? Thinking I might sell the camper, (cell phone included).
