Cape Cod National Seashore, Provincetown, MA Off road information line: 508-487-3698, General information line: 508-487-2100, extension 110Web site: www.nps.gov/cacoBeach Permits will go on sale April 10th at the oversand office; weekly reservations can be made on line at www.nps.gov/caco/upload/ORVregistrationform-2.pdfIt was great to get back and see everyone; we were there on April 24th and saw lots of right whales and dolphins, it was really something to see them so close to shore and so plentiful in one location. It was good to be there for our 2011 spring project on April 30th., we had a great turnout and the park staff was very pleased with the result. Campers were allowed to stay on the beach for both Friday and Saturday nights. Very special thanks to North District Ranger Craig Thatcher for always making us welcome, and for coming out and working right along side of us during the project. It is heartwarming to see the relationships that have developed between the rangers and our members, and how friendly the interactions are, the lesson being never underestimate the value of our conservation and goodwill efforts. The beach is open from Hatches Harbor to exit 8, even the trail to the backside, overall it looks good for the season, the beach is narrow to the north, but hopefully it will build, there is quite a bit of shipwreck debris scattered around the beach down back, it’s not known where it came from but the park staff is looking into it. The plovers are busy scratching and trying to attract mates so the symbolic fence is way out on the beach, hopefully it will be moved in once the nests are established. Thanks to everyone that came out for the project and to our Courtesy Patrol for the food, special thanks to Bill Correia for getting it all together and to Jim Conboy for the sausages, easily the best feed this spring. After lunch at the conservation project we were invited to participate in an interesting and educational program by Ranger Jody Anastasio about the seals, thanks to everyone who attended. Remember to stop into the Province Land Visitors Center and pick up some 50th year memorabilia, the pins and patches are very nice. Peter Murray, Race Point Beach Rep. pmurray@mbba.net 508-944-4447

Looking forward to a weekend on the sand, the Shore Bird scoping meeting is on Thursday at Salt Pond Visitors Center and then on to the beach, I hope you can make it! There are active nests near both access points, north and south that will be hatching around the first week of June, so the SCV's will be shut out until July. Peter

The word right now is that days in the visitors center will count against your 21 days allowed. It's too bad that it came to this but the long term camping there while waiting for the beach to open has become an issue.
Don't shoot the messenger

UPDATED BEACH REPORT 6-21-2011
Hatches Harbor should be the first area to re-open. There was one nest and there are currently 3 chicks in the area. These chicks will reach 35 days by July 7. There is a chance that they could fledge before or after that date.
Race Point North has 9 plover nests along the corridor. There are approximately 20 least tern nests in the vicinity of the access.
Two plover nests near the access have hatched, and a third nest that had hatched lost all of its chicks and re-nested recently. It looks like RPN will be closed for the foreseeable future.
Race Point South has 5 plover nests. One of the nests is right next to the access. This nest has 3 chicks that are just over a week old. A second nest near the access is not scheduled to hatch until sometime next week, this will most likely cause RPS to be closed for at least another month.
High Head has 4 plover nests. One of the nests was just north of the access. This nest has hatched and there are currently 2 chicks. These chicks will enter their fledge window next week. This area should be able to be opened in early July to the South towards Head of the Meadow if the other broods don't move south. There are other nests to the north of High Head that will keep portions of that beach closed for awhile. The High Head area is known for predation, so this area sometimes opens unexpectedly. The beach is narrow at the access, but is drivable.
Head of the Meadow has 4 plover nests all between the north side of the protected beach, and the oversand access. There are also least terns in the area. The least tern population is currently growing. As was the case last year, after the plovers fledged the least terns were far enough south of the ORV access that this was opened.
Coast Guard had one nest to the north of the access that hatched Saturday evening. This nest is less than 0.2 miles that closed the beach to vehicles. These birds will be monitored to see where they are feeding, and if they stay towards the north, there is a possibility that the beach could re-open.
